UPI payment verification: a checklist before you pay

UPI is instant and, once sent, almost impossible to reverse. A few seconds of checking before you approve a payment or a request is the whole game. Keep these rules handy.

The rules that keep you safe

You never enter a PIN to receive money

A UPI PIN is only ever needed to send money. Anyone telling you to "enter your PIN to receive a refund / prize / payment" is stealing from you. No exceptions.

Read the payee name, not the promise

Before you approve, check the registered name your app shows for the UPI ID. If it does not match who you think you are paying, stop.

Decline unexpected "collect" requests

A collect request pulls money from you. Scammers send them disguised as refunds or payments owed to you. If you did not initiate it, decline it.

A screenshot is not a payment

Before you hand over goods, confirm the money in your own bank/app balance — not on a screenshot the buyer sends. Fake payment screenshots are trivial to make.

Scan QR codes only to pay, never to be paid

Scanning a QR code always sets up a payment from you. "Scan this QR to receive your refund" is always a scam.

Verify a new payee with a small amount

For a first payment to a new vendor or account, send ₹1 and confirm it landed with the right party before releasing the full amount.
